
Promoting psychosocial resilience for parents and teachers during COVID 19 school closures in Ghana: A Recap of the Kpododo Voice Campaign and Bulk SMS Initiative
The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the global education system in 2020, forcing the closure of schools and disrupting the learning experience for millions of students worldwide. The closure not only affected the students but also had a great impact on parents and teachers.
Effective communication strategies were seen as critical in promoting mental health and resilience during the health crisis. In Ghana, the use of audio messages and bulk SMS emerged as a critical tool to providing psychosocial support to teachers and parents during school closures. At the height of the pandemic, the platform was adapted to support teachers and parents by providing guidance on how to support children’s learning and well-being at home.
Through their “Schools are Closed, but It’s Not a Holiday” Project, Savana Signatures and Edukans International used the Kpododo mobile engagement platform to transmit Voice/Bulk SMS to promote psychosocial resilience among teachers and parents during the pandemic. The messages provided guidance on how to support children’s learning and well-being at home, reducing stress and anxiety for parents and teachers. The messages also helped in combating feelings of loneliness and disconnection, providing a sense of connection and community during the era of isolation.
Kpododo’s Voice/Bulk SMS system had a significant impact on teachers and parents as the tailored, localized messages helped to reduce stress and anxiety, promoted psychosocial resilience during a challenging time. The messages empowering parents and teachers to navigate the uncertainties of the pandemic.
